As a recognized authority on the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle, Dr. Frank Sabatino has cared for and inspired thousands of people for over 40 years. Dr. Sabatino has a PhD in cell biology and neuroendocrinology and has done extensive landmark research on calorie restriction, stress, and aging. He currently is on staff at the TrueNorth Health Foundation in Santa Rosa, CA, and serves as the Director of Health Education at the NHA.

We are grateful to the NHA for allowing us to use their podcasts exclusively for all of our Wisdom Walks. Please consider becoming a member of this amazing organization.

Renowned as a board-certified internist, author of 13 national best-selling books, and co-founder of the McDougall Program, Dr. John McDougall has made a lasting impact on the field of plant-based nutrition and disease reversal. During his interview with Dr. Frank Sabatino, host of the NHA Health Science Podcast, Dr. McDougall went deep into his experiences, challenges, and advocacy efforts for people to live more healthful lives, shedding light on his remarkable journey as one of the most recognized names in the plant-based movement.

Dr. McDougall’s commitment to patient education led him to advocate for informed consent laws, addressing the need for transparency in treatment options. Notably, he played a pivotal role in passing legislation in Hawaii and California.

In these efforts, Dr. McDougall sought to ensure that patients, especially those facing conditions like breast cancer and diabetes, were fully informed about the available choices, including dietary interventions. His advocacy reflects a dedication to empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health.

As we were walking and learning together yesterday during our Wisdom Walk, I managed to take a few notes and I would like to share a few of the ideas which impacted me in some way. I am paraphrasing what I heard during the interview - filtered by my own mitote of ideas and thoughts.

I took plenty of notes and learned so much from Dr McDougall and Dr Sabatino about their own practices and how to overcome obstacles from living this lifestyle.

As always, it just pure pleasure to listen to Dr McDougall share both his personal story and his amazing knowledge - not to mention a few surprises! Here is just a bit of what I was able to take notes on whilst moving!

  • Dr McDougall has earned the ACLM LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

  • His sickness as a child due to the SAD reality of the times led him to medicine

  • He found that what he learned in medical school simply did not work

  • He learned that our health system was designed for 'repeat customers', not cures

  • His work on a sugar plantation showed him the realities of what the SAD can do to people through caring for thousands of first, second and third generation field workers - with each generation becoming more and more sick

  • "I lost my loyalty to standard medicine when I saw how little they helped with chronic disease"

  • He expanded his knowledge of healing during his time at St Helena's in Napa, where he worked for 16 years

  • He set up his own private practice (which lasted for 18 years) in Santa Rosa, CA - until Covid and then he set up a Telehealth system in 2020

  • His research and work over the years has shown us the truth about the impact of diet and lifestyle on our health - "give the food a chance before you take the medicine or procedures - the problem is that you are suffering from food poisoning."

  • "Vegetables are yuck! We are starchatarians, starchavores!"

  • "The popular way to kill yourself is the Atkins diet, carb-free diets and keto"

  • Total fat percentage in our diets should range between 7% - 10 % TOTAL

  • He is a WARRRIOR in helping pass legislation in California (SB380CA) in 2011 requiring doctors to now inform patients that nutrition does indeed play a role in their health

  • He is fiesty, funny and incredibly enjoyable and learning from him was wonderful

Thank you to Dr McDougall and Dr Sabatino for a wonderful interview together, for getting us moving whilst learning and for the joy and knowledge you both continue to share with us all - you have our gratitude.
